He went with a smile: assisted dying saved my husband from torment.

“It was quick, it was pain-free. It was very loving, it was peaceful. I’m proud I was able to help him to achieve the death he craved.”

Barbara’s husband Adrian – a prominent British railway executive who led Chiltern Railways – was diagnosed with motor neurone disease at the age of 72.

The couple shared a love of travel, and spent much of their life together exploring different countries by car.

As Adrian’s health declined, Barbara became his full-time carer, until the day came where he decided he couldn’t go on.

“He couldn’t breathe properly or swallow. It was at this point that he decided he wanted an assisted death.”

Every dying person should have the choice of a death as calm as Adrian’s.
But no one should have to travel hundreds of miles to do so.
